Bringing the Outdoors In

I've always had house plants. They are a big deal in this household. I started my cactus collection in elementary school, plus have all sorts of palms, ivies, and aloes around the house. Just this past fall we sadly had to give away our 20+ year old ficus tree as it was just too big (even with our high ceilings), and this year our grapefruit tree will probably be next. As I see our biggest living organisms leave the home, I'm starting to think of life on a smaller scale. Enter terrariums.

At first, the idea seemed a little too retro, but now I can't wait to build my own little world. They range from basic bell jars (any Plath fans out there?) to enclosed hanging orbs. Honestly, just thinking about it makes me giddy. Maybe I'll ask for a terrarium for my birthday... Yes. A terrarium and a 12 pack of Miller High Life. Wheeee!!

Will definitely be checking out this book for inspiration.

I love this glass hanging orb from Terrain.

How cool is this terrarium?? (Very.)

  2. I have a grapefruit "tree" that has traveled with me to all my homes. I planted it with my mother with a few seeds when I was 4 years old. We've had to replant it several times. It doesn't love the winters but thrives in the summertime. It's almost 40 years old. Don't toss your tree!
